A nonprofit organization committed to end homelessness by first providing stable housing and support for youth aging out of foster care, ensuring they have the foundation to thrive. From there, we expand our efforts to families and individuals experiencing chronic homelessness, offering long-term solutions that promote dignity, stability, and economic mobility. Through innovative housing strategies and community partnerships, we are committed to breaking the cycle of homelessness for good.
A non-profit, creating opportunity, and security through housing and mentorship.
We provide short term, safe and nurturing shelter, combating homelessness among young men and women In Detroit. In addition to providing security through housing, we also provide mentorship, and educational programs to teach our youth to become self-sufficient, confident adults. We rely on our network of mentors, and community leaders to help guide our young men, and women to become a valuable member of our community.
A Place of Refuge was founded in 2009 by Rhonda Roberts-Barley with the goal of addressing homelessness among young men and women with a focus on African American young men “aging out” of foster care. Recognizing that many programs were available for young women, but not many for males and more specific African American males.
We strive to provide a wrap-around nurturing environment that promotes self-love, self-respect, and self-sufficiency.
We are forever evolving to meet the needs of young men and women in efforts to strengthen, educate, and prepare them for sustainable living.
